Building Confidence at the Board Level

“Working with Half the Sky gave our Board the language, the confidence and the shared understanding to lead on EDI in a way that feels genuinely ours. It was exactly what we had hoped for”

Gwen Morgan-Evans, Partner, Hugh James

The situation:

Hugh James is a top 100 full-service UK law firm, employing over 700 staff across offices in Cardiff, London and across England.

The firm had been making meaningful progress on its diversity and inclusion journey -establishing staff networks, improving policies, and analysing people data - led by a Board sponsor working closely with the HR Director. This progress had developed organically, driven by committed individuals rather than a shared, leadership-led approach.

As the firm expanded and refreshed its brand - with inclusivity positioned as a core value - the top team recognised the need for a more intentional, strategic approach. They wanted to start at the top: building confidence, alignment and clarity among senior leaders to shape the next phase of their inclusion journey.

What we did:

We worked closely with the Lead Partner and HR Director to design a bespoke session for the Board and senior leadership team.

We explored the firm’s ambitions for inclusion, the maturity of its current approach, and how these aligned with its broader strategic goals and values. We could then focus the session on a key question: what does “being inclusive” mean in practice?

The outcomes:

  • Greater confidence among senior leaders in discussing diversity and inclusion

  • A clearer, shared understanding of inclusive leadership in practice

  • Stronger alignment between inclusion ambitions and firm values

  • Increased leadership engagement and ownership of the inclusion agenda

  • A clear platform for developing the firm’s next phase of strategy
